Research Areas:

  • Identification support for suspected adventive arthropods in North America.
  • Detection of and survey for immigrant (exotic) arthropods in North America.
  • Systematics, phylogeny, biogeography and natural history of rove beetles (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae).

Background:

Rick is a native of Michigan and received his B.S. degree in Biological Sciences in 1971 and his M.S. degree in Systematic Entomology in 1973 both from Michigan State University, and continued his graduate studies in Systematic Entomology in a Ph.D. program at Cornell University from 1974-1977. His thesis research was a taxonomic revision of species of the staphylinid tribe Falagriini of America north of Mexico.

While a portion of his current research includes phylogenetic and taxonomic studies of beetles of the family Staphylinidae of North, Central, and South America, his primary research interests focus on the detection of and survey for non-indigenous (exotic) insects among the North American entomofauna. Having discovered many alien species either new to the Western Hemisphere, North America, or the United States during the past 20 years, he has written or co-written over 60 publications on these and related topics. He not only has collected and identified immigrant species belonging to diverse orders, but he has also published numerous papers on exotic species, providing valuable information on their recognition, North American distribution, seasonal history, and habits.

One of Rick's leisure activities is road running and cross country running. He is a national-ranked Masters runner (age 40+) and was recognized as "Honorable Mention" in the Men's 45-49 age-group by Running Times Magazine in the United States in 1995 and 1996. He races distances from 5km to 10 miles on the roads and also cross country.
