Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Adelges tsugae)

Typical infestation on hemlock branch Current distribution in New York

The natural spread of hemlock woolly adelgid continues. The newest sighting was in Albany County in late winter of 2004. The adelgid infestation in Monroe County seems to be holding its own, but NYS DEC may finally start eradication efforts soon. The ultimate spread of this pest has not been realized, but there is hope that cold temperatures will limit its northward and westward spread in the state.
