Physical description: This perennial plant has a clumping habit and
reaches 18 in. tall and 2 ft. across. The alternate leaves are
2 to 5 in. long, are colored medium green, and have serrated
margins. Flowering occurs in late summer, and the small bright
yellow flowers, which are 1/12 to 1/8 in. wide, are borne in
large panicles up to 10 in. long.
Optimal growing conditions: Goldenrod prefers full sun, although it can tolerate
light to moderate shade. It performs best in poor to moderately
fertile soils, especially in sandy soils; in high fertility soils,
growth is more rampant. Good drainage is necessary, and this
plant is moderately drought-resistant. Also, this species is
very tolerant to high salt conditions, making it well suited
to roadsides. Winter hardiness: Zones 2-8.
Susceptibility to pests and diseases: This species has no serious insect pest problems,
but diseases such as powdery mildew, rust, and some fungal spots
sometimes occur.
Use:
The attractive and familiar flowers of Goldenrod are suitable
in many gardens and in front of borders. S. sphacelata
may also be used as a ground cover species because of its creeping
habit.
