Physical description: This perennial plant forms hairy tufts that reach 8 in. tall and 6 in. wide. The evergreen leaves are colored medium green. Basal leaves are spoon-shaped, and stem leaves are lance-shaped. They reach 3 in. long. Flowering occurs in summer, and pink flowers are 1 inch across and borne in large corymbs.

Optimal growing conditions: Campions grows well in well drained, moderately fertile, neutral to lightly acidic soils. They perform best in full sun or light shade. Winter hardiness: Zones 4-7.

Susceptibility to pests and diseases: Pests such as slugs, snails, whiteflies, spider mites, and aphids may do some damage. Diseases such as rust, smut, and leaf fungi are common.

Use: Silene species are used in front of borders, or in rock gardens.
