Physical description: This perennial plant has a clumping habit, reaches
about 2 feet tall, and spreads 12 inches wide. Leaves are dark-green,
toothed along the edges, glabrous, and strongly aromatic. They
are 3-4 inches long. Flowering occurs from mid-summer to early
autumn; flowers are bright blue, 1 inch long, and are borne in
whorled cymes along the flower stems.
Optimal growing conditions: This species performs best in moist and cool
soils. It prefers full sun or light to moderate shade, and is
quite accommodating to a wide range of fertility and pH. Winter
hardiness: Zones 5-9.
Susceptibility to pests and diseases: This species has no serious insect pests, but
leaf spot may be a problematic disease.
Use:
Catmints are suitable in rock gardens or aromatics gardens. Nepeta
subsessilis is especially recommended for moderately shaded
and moist places.
