Physical description: This low-growing herbaceous perennial forms creeping
a mat, which reaches 1 to 2 in. tall and can spread indefinitely.
Leaves are opposite, entire, nearly round, and reach 1 in. wide.
They are bright green, glabrous, and have long trailing stems.
Flowering occurs in late spring with sporadic flowering until
mid summer. Flowers are solitary, regular, and are colored yellow
with dark dots. The fruit is non-ornamental. The cultivar 'Aurea'
has brilliant yellow-green foliage.
Optimal growing conditions: Creeping jenny is soil tolerant but performs
best in a moist soil. Dry soils are not tolerated. Easy to establish,
its growth is fast, especially in light to moderate shade. Winter
hardiness: Zones 3-8. The cultivar 'Aurea' prefers full sun to
enhance the yellow foliage.
Susceptibility to pests and diseases: Bud scales, mites, and woolly aphids may cause
some damage. Concerning diseases, fungal leaf blight is sometimes
problematic.
Use:
This species is a good groundcover. The only problem comes from
its very invasive nature, which makes it important to not combine
it with other low-growing species. The cultivar 'Aurea' can brighten
a dull area.
