Physical description: This grass-like evergreen perennial forms a heavy and dense mass. Leaves are 1 in. wide and 12-18 in. long. Flowering occurs in late summer, and flowers are formed on upright stems in clusters, which reach 6 to 8 in. wide. Flowers have 6 petals and are ½ in. wide. The cultivar 'Royal Purple' has dark purple flowers.

Optimal growing conditions: As with other Liriope species, Blue Lily-turf may tolerate a wide range of well-drained soils. Drought and heat resistant, it is particularly suitable in southern gardens. Concerning light exposure, Blue lily-turf does well in sun or shade, and can grow in heavy shade, although spread is slower in this case. Growth is optimum in light shade and a fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Winter hardiness: Zones 5 to 10.

Susceptibility to pests and diseases: This plant has no serious problems with diseases and insects. Snails and slugs may do some damage.

Use: Tolerant to heat, humidity, drought, diseases, and insects, Blue lily-turf is an excellent ground cover, especially in southern areas or in shady and dry places where little else can grow.
