Physical description: Hosta plants have heart-shaped leaves that are
light-yellowish green and glossy. The flowers are very large,
trumpet-shaped, white, and heavily fragrant.
Optimal growing conditions: Hostas require full to partial shade, as well
as soil with good organic matter content. Partial shade is preferred,
and in some drier areas, full sun can cause the leaves to yellow
and scorch on the edges. It grows best in rich, well-drained
soil with some moisture and shade.
Susceptibility to pests and diseases: Generally, Hostas require little maintenance
and are easy to grow. However, slugs, snails, leaf spots, and
crown rot can become a problem.
Use:
It is an excellent plant to be used as borders in rock gardens
and pools, or massed plantings in large shaded areas.
