Physical description: Blue sedge is a dense, clump-forming sedge with narrow, blue-gray to blue-green evergreen foliage that grows to 6 to 12 inches. Although it blooms on terminal, cylindrical spikes in late spring, this plant is grown mainly for its foliage effect.

Optimal growing conditions: Blue sedge tolerates a wide range of soil conditions, and exposures; it can adapt to areas with fairly heavy shade, is very drought tolerant, withstands light foot traffic, is hardy to about 0°F (-18°C). It prefers moist soil.

Susceptibility to pests and diseases: There are no serious pest or disease problems for this plant.

Use: Blue sedge is well suited as groundcover or border plant in rock gardens or moist and shaded areas near ponds or streams.
