Physical description: Pig squeak is a clump-forming perennial with
cabbage-like evergreen foliage that has a bold, glossy appearance.
Clusters of bell-shaped pink flowers are borne on scapes just
above the foliage. The leaves may turn burgundy red in cold winters.
The flowers are often of secondary interest due to the ornamental
effect of the foliage.
Optimal growing conditions: Pig squeak grows well in full sun or partial
shade and is adaptable to a wide variety of soils. Moist soils
enriched with organic matter are preferred. The flower buds can
be damaged during harsh winters.
Susceptibility to pests and diseases: Usually there are no serious problems.
Use:
This plant makes a good perennial border, edge of a pool, and
rock garden as well as ground cover for woodland and shade gardens
or edging for paths and walkways. Pig squeak looks the best when
a number of plants are used to create a mass planting.
