Physical description: Astilbe forms a clump of rich, fern-like, dark green foliage. The leaves are ovate and doubly serrate. The feathery, plume-like flowers come in variety of colors from red, pink, and white to lavender, and are about 6 inches long.

Optimal growing conditions: Astilbe prefers partial shade, but will tolerate full sun if soil is kept moist. It grows best in fertile and moist soil. This plant is not drought tolerant; if sufficient moisture is not provided, it will result in brown foliage and premature death of leaves. Protection from wind is also advised.

Susceptibility to pests and diseases: Some of the diseases reported are powdery mildew and wilt. White fly, black vine weevil, and adult Japanese beetle can become problematic.

Use: Astilbe is effective as woodland border or ground cover in shade gardens, under the trees, or around ponds or streams. Can be used as fresh-cut flowers, too.
