Extension Program

Entomological extension programming at Cornell (Ithaca) covers most of the major agricultural commodities and consumer needs of New York State, and provides support for extension staff located throughout the state. The needs of the dairy industry (New York's largest agricultural sector) and other livestock producers are met by the Veterinary extension program. The needs of the "Green Industry" (production, sale, and management of ornamental plants, the second largest agricultural enterprise in the state) are addressed by the Floriculture program and the Woody Ornamentals program. The Vegetable, Potato, and Field Crop growers of the state are covered by their respective programs. Problems and issues related to bee-keeping are the responsibility of the Apiculture program. Additional Cornell entomological extension programming originates from the state Agricultural Experiment Station located in Geneva; these programs cover turfgrass producers and managers, fruit producers, and other vegetable growers.

The Insect Diagnostic Lab offers insect identification assistance to all who need it. Associated with the diagnostic lab are the programs designed to deal with consumer issues relating to insects around Homes and Grounds (the Master Gardener Program falls in this area as well). Programming is also aimed at Youth and 4-H. Issues concerning proper use and application of pesticides is handled by the Pesticide Managment and Education Program (PMEP).

A big part of the extension system at Cornell are the agents located throughout the state; currently, there are educators stationed in each of the 56 counties of New York State.
